I love Uncle West and Aunt Tracey!

We have so much to be thankful for this year!  I am blown away by how God has continued to protect and grow our family.  We are happy and healthy.  We have a house.  We have cars.  We have no debt.  We have a church.  We have family.  We have friends.   And we have friends that are family.  We have sweet neighbors.  We have food.  We have a wonderful marriage.  And of course, we have a beautiful girl who brings us so much joy each and every day.

But most of all, we have a God whose love endures forever!!!!!!

Psalm 136

1 Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good.
       His love endures forever.

2 Give thanks to the God of gods.
       His love endures forever.

3 Give thanks to the Lord of lords:
       His love endures forever.

4 to him who alone does great wonders,
       His love endures forever.

5 who by his understanding made the heavens,
       His love endures forever.

6 who spread out the earth upon the waters,
       His love endures forever.

7 who made the great lights—
       His love endures forever.

8 the sun to govern the day,
       His love endures forever.

 9 the moon and stars to govern the night;
       His love endures forever.

10 to him who struck down the firstborn of Egypt
       His love endures forever.

11 and brought Israel out from among them
       His love endures forever.

 12 with a mighty hand and outstretched arm;
       His love endures forever.

13 to him who divided the Red Sea asunder
       His love endures forever.

14 and brought Israel through the midst of it,
       His love endures forever.

 15 but swept Pharaoh and his army into the Red Sea;
       His love endures forever.

16 to him who led his people through the desert,
       His love endures forever.

17 who struck down great kings,
       His love endures forever.

 18 and killed mighty kings—
       His love endures forever.

19 Sihon king of the Amorites
       His love endures forever.

20 and Og king of Bashan—
       His love endures forever.

21 and gave their land as an inheritance,
       His love endures forever.

 22 an inheritance to his servant Israel;
       His love endures forever.

23 to the One who remembered us in our low estate
       His love endures forever.

24 and freed us from our enemies,
       His love endures forever.

25 and who gives food to every creature.
       His love endures forever.

26 Give thanks to the God of heaven.
       His love endures forever.

Being Thankful

On Monday, Finley and I drove to the City Rescue Mission downtown to deliver a turkey.  I got us majorally lost in the process and was about ready to give in when I happened upon it.  We started this tradition last year and it was no less uncomfortable with a 13 month old as it was with a 1 month old.  Seeing all of the homeless people milling around, well, it was just one of those hold-your-purse-close-to-you-don't-make-eye-contact moments.

...

Recently, Jenny Simmons blogged about being Godly...  She is one of my favorite bloggers and even though we've never met, I like to think we are related.  She is afterall the lead singer of Addison Road... the group that Travis, Beth's cousin, is in and since Beth is my sister and all, I figure somehow that makes Jenny and I relatives... or at the very least friends!

She has an uncanny ability to make me laugh and cry within a single sentence and I love her honesty and perspective.  I don't, however, like how much she can make me grow in the midst of a single post.  I mean really... Blogging is just for fun! ;)

Beth called me after this post and said "I really hate that a 23-year-old is smarter than me."  I asked her if it would make her feel better that Jenny is 29 and she said "Yes, actually it does."  Ha, ha!

...

Finley and I were taking the turkey because I wanted to DO something.  Devin and I are good at writing checks.  In fact, we had already given to several organizations for Thanksgiving, but I wanted Finley to have an active part in helping others.  I want her to see just how much more we have than others... how much God has blessed us and how we grateful we should be.

But where's the line?

The perfect line on the spectrum of naive and worldly.  How do I train her to be pure and innocent without being naive; yet aware without being wordly?  How do I protect her and yet not shelter her to the point that she is ignorant?

It's questions like these that make me fall to my knees so thankful that God has entrusted me with this responsibility and yet so overwhelmed because I have no idea how to be the parent I so desire to be.

As Jenny puts it:

"You can’t very well walk around with your eyes closed. Though many try. I meet a lot of religious people around the country who are convinced that trying to raise their kids with a blindfold and earplugs and a chastity belt and ankle cuffs and no access to the real world will protect them from the pitfalls of human nature and keep them a safe distance from all things unholy. The general result of this protectionism tactic is students who have no clue what it’s like to be human in this great big world. They know only one thing, one way, and they cannot relate to anyone else. These are the kids who would have been shocked had they taken a field trip with Jesus. It would have been the most inappropriate field trip of their lives; visiting prostitutes and wedding parties that were overflowing with wine and all."

And that's the key...  In order to raise her to be holy, I must raise her to not look away even when I myself want to look away....

"Well, it is quite an easy exercise to use my faith as an excuse for closing my eyes to everything else that exists in the world. But the problem is, Jesus didn’t seem to close his eyes. He was sort of out there in the mix of things calling them for what they were: light or dark. And I can almost envision Him walking by a beach full of religious people with their heads buried in the sand, like ostrich do, and Jesus plucking them out (perhaps laughing a bit as the sun stings their eyes), so that they can actually see and interact and get up close and personal with the real world."

How much easier it would be to give Finley a blindfold, earplugs, and a chastity belt!!!!!  I admit that it is so incredibly tempting.
...

But Christ didn't just write a check to His local charity... He was out amongst the real world.  Did that make Him worldly?  No.  Was He still pure, innocent, Godly?  Of course.

It is so obvious that I need to get out of my comfort zone (because let's be honest... our 20 minutes on the wrong side of town is hardly a REAL sacrifice!) and be thankful... truly thankful for what God has blessed us with... in order to be Godly.  Not just around Thanksgiving, but every second of every day.

Finley Going DOWN the Stairs

This video absolutely cracks me up!  She backs into the guest room, but somehow manages to correct herself and find her way to the stairs.  Neither Devin or I taught her how to go backwards so we're pretty impressed with her newfound ability!  The grunts and sound effects are definitely necessary for successfully making her way down!

All About Finley

So now that Finley is over a year, I was trying to decide whether or not to continue monthly updates, but at 13 months, she is still changing so much that I decided I would continue them for at least awhile longer!

She weighs 19 pounds 8 ounces (10th percentile) and is still 29 inches long (25th percentile).

She now drinks 2 sippy cups full of milk a day... one when she wakes up and one before bed.

She is wearing 6-12 month dresses and shirts... I bought 12-18 month onesies the other day and they fit really well since she has such a long torso, but her pants are 6-9 months so she's kind of all over the places in sizes right now.  She is finally wearing a size 3 shoe so her feet continue to be small as well.

She is becoming much more interested in toys these days!!!!  Thank goodness for a toy room!  I am desperately hoping for bookshelves and baskets for Christmas to help organize all of it!

Blocks are her favorite toy and she loves to hide them into the trunk of her little car.  (As a side note.... do not paint your toy room orange... it makes for horrible lighting when taking photographs! =)

She is fascinated with buttons and zippers!

She has started fake coughing all the time!  She thinks it is sooooo funny.  Devin has been coughing for two weeks straight so I'm sure she is trying to be like Daddy. =)

She is very into putting lids onto things and is very precise about it.  I'm usually amazed at her ability to get the lid on just right.  She is also very precise about taking things out of one coffee table drawer and putting it in another.

She is much more vocal these days... jabbering almost constantly though her vocabulary is still rather limited.  I have a feeling once she has actual words, she is going to be quite the talker!  She is really good at saying Cat and Car though they sound exactly the same.  As soon as she sees either of them she says "Ca".

She still isn't walking these days... unless you count walking on her knees which she does quite frequently.  I would be stressing about it, but I figure she has the rest of her life to walk and almost everyone I've talked to recently said their kids didn't walk until 14 months.  Besides, I know she is fully capable of walking as she does so all the time while holding my pinky, but she just hasn't found the confidence to do it by herself yet.

She loves to eat.  She has definitely acquired her love of bread and her love of shoveling all food into her mouth at once from me!  She always puts way too much food in her mouth, but somehow manages to eat it without choking!  She can also eat off a plate really well now!

Her favorite foods these days are still bananas, but she has also recently added raisins to the list.  I don't know why you would ever give candy to a kid if they react like she does to raisins.  You would think I was giving her cotton candy the way she lights up!  Oh, and yogurt too!  She LOVES yogurt and Devin has to hide it from her at lunch or otherwise she'll eat his whole container.

She has also gotten more picky with food... She doesn't really like meat unless it's baby food (or my enchiladas as seen above).  She also prefers baby food veggies to regular veggies, but she's making progress.  She does seem less orange now that she isn't eating much baby food!

She is getting better about wearing shoes now that I found these cute little boots for her.  She doesn't really keep other shoes on her feet very well which is why these already look pretty ragged in real life.

She is enjoying books a lot more which makes my heart so happy!  She still can't sit still for very long, but I've started reading to her while she is playing and she'll come over and look at the pictures for awhile before scurrying off.  I've also started putting books in her crib and have found her looking at them several times when I go in after nap time.

She is showing the beginning stages of being a hoarder!  She loves to take the magnetic letters off the refrigerator and hide them behind the sweeper vac in the laundry room.  She also LOVES watching me put on my makeup, but will take all of it and hide it behind the pillows.  It cracks me up.  Here she is hoarding all the spices into a new "safe" keeping spot...  And yes, I let her do it so that I could get dinner finished and yes, we soon put looks on the cabinet shortly after taking this pic.  She obviously likes taking things in and out as this is the third picture of her doing so in one post!

She LOVES to dance.  If she becomes cranky, I pick her up and start two-stepping or ballet-ing with her and she gets SOOOOOO happy!

She can now crawl down the stairs and prefers to do that more than climb up them.  It's difficult to get her to climb up them because she'll climb up two and then go down two.  (I have no idea why she has no clothes on except for her boots!!!!!!)

When she finds a bow for her hair, she immediately tries to stick it on the very back of her head!  She looks at me very confused when it falls off and doesn't stay put.

She also thinks it is very funny when anyone puts her bows in their hair.

She likes to scoot our dining room chairs around the floor.  I don't encourage this habit since I can just see her climbing up on it one day in order to climb onto the cabinets or get into something she isn't supposed to!  She can already climb into the refrigerator when I'm cooking!!!!

I am obsessed with her sweet laugh.  It is the most precious sound in the whole world!

She still really enjoys bath time and will play forever if we let her!

She loves, loves, loves to be outside and crawl around.

She continues to be VERY happy... the only time she isn't happy is when she's sleepy and then she becomes really serious.

She is MUCH more snuggly than she used to be.  She will now lay her head on our shoulders and just sit there... for a whole 20 seconds!  Seriously, that's impressive for our Finners!

She loves getting into my purse!!!!

She still has two bottom teeth and four top.  I thought she was teething again, but turned out to be a cold.

She has become a big helper... she tries to help us click the seatbelt of her carseat and she also puts her arms up when we're dressing her and pushes her arms through the sleeves.  It really is nice that she can do these things now!

She can get in and out of her car now!  Her legs aren't long enough to actually drive it around, but she likes playing with the horn and pushing it around.

She tries to open her baby gate.  Thankfully she can't yet, but she clearly knows where it latches and is always trying to figure it out.

She now picks up the remote control and points it at the TV and then looks at me when it doesn't come on.  It amazes me how quickly kids pick up on these types of things because our TV is never on when she is awake except on the weekends.

She has gotten fewer swats this month since we have put baby locks on most of the cabinets.  It has made my life so much easier since Finley is still a bit too young to understand swats.  We really want to be effective disciplinarians, but so far, she isn't responding very much to "No" and swats.  Here she is "helping" Daddy put the locks on... See I wasn't kidding about those!

We always put her to bed with two binkies since one inevitably ends up on the floor, but what cracks us up is that when we put her in her crib, we put one binky in her mouth and then the other one in her hand and she always switches them... We don't know what is better about the binky we put in her hand, but she always has to try it out.

This is the exact look she gets when she hears the beep of the door signaling "Daddy's Home!"

She is much less squirmy during diaper changes these days!!!!!!  Hooray!

She has become a BIG sleeper!  In fact, I'm going to ask the pediatrician about it on Monday when she goes back for her flu booster.  She is sleeping 12-13 hours a night (often waking up at 9 or later in the morning) and taking 4-5 hours worth of naps each day.  18 hours of sleep seems like a lot!!!!  She is super happy and energetic though when she's awake so maybe she just likes sleep like me and her dad do!

And as always, she is truly the most wonderful, beautiful toddler ever and I love her more than I can stand!
