Our appointment was at 3:45 p.m. and we sat in the waiting room forever. I had never had to wait very long before, but figured it was just the time of day. After we had been waiting for almost an hour, I went to the bathroom and then checked my phone. I saw I had a message so I called my voicemail and I hear Annika's (my nurse) voice "Michelle, Dr. Wayman and I were just worried about you. It's not like you to miss an appointment. Please give us a call to reschedule."
I jumped up and went to the desk and said "I'm here and my nurse thinks I missed my appointment!" Apparently, my encounter form had fallen behind some charts. Everyone was super apologetic and they got us right in.
Annika came in and we heard the heartbeat. It was always my favorite part, but it was rare that our little girl would stay in one place long enough for me to hear it long. Dr. Wayman came in quickly after Annika left and when she saw Devin was with me, she felt even more terrible that we didn't get right in.
Dr. Wayman asked how I had been feeling and whether I had had any contractions. I replied "No contractions and I'm feeling great still!" I was confident that our little girl would come after our due date so I was absolutely shocked when after my exam Dr. Wayman said "I hope your bags are packed." I just looked at her like she was crazy. She then said "You're dilated to a 2 and 80% effaced and sweetie, you have been having contractions!" I laughed and she said she'd see me next week.
After she left, I asked Devin "So I'm 20% effaced?" And he laughed and said "NO! You're 80% effaced and dilated to a 2." I was so glad he was there because I was having so much trouble comprehending it all.
When we got to the parking lot, I called Beth to tell her she was officially "on call" and she had a similar reaction. She kept saying "What? I'm on call, but you still have a month." We were both in disbelief!
And with that one brief appointment, I suddenly became incredibly impatient for our little one to arrive!
