Surviving the Storm 2011

So I love nothing more than severe winter storms.  I love staying home.  I love pajama days.  I love cooking yummy comfort food.  I love not feeling guilty that I am not leaving my house for days in a row.  I love all of it.  Typically, we are always on the go so I look forward to these rare chances to do nothing and not feel the need to go somewhere.

This time around it was a bit different.  Though I was looking forward to the storm, I was also worried about going into labor, getting to the hospital, having doctors and nurses who could make it to the hospital, etc.  I have rarely heard the words "impossible travel" "blizzard conditions" "below 0 temperatures for multiple days in a row" "snow routes closed" etc.  But they have been prominent phrases this past week.

Fortunately, like I mentioned in my 37 week post, my doctor alleviated a few of my fears by promising me that she could and would make it to the hospital.  When she also offered to pick me up and take me if necessary, I was even more at peace.  I mean seriously who does that?  I love it.  I knew God had/has already determined LbC's birthday, but selfishly I was/am hoping that he would/will choose to come at a time that is convenient.  Aunt Beth has plans to be in the delivery room again, but that obviously requires that roads be travellable and that she be healthy.  Unfortunately, this past week neither has been the case and with more bad weather predicted for next week, who knows?  I am learning to put away my expectations and ideal situations and trust that God will work out the details.  I am thankful that he hasn't come yet because of the weather and because I want his lungs to be fully developed, but having been told that he could come any time now, I am growing a bit impatient as well!!!!!!!

So here's how we spent the week:

Monday night: Devin got home and we loaded the car... all of our bags for the next few days PLUS all of the things we would need for the hospital.  Drove to Devin's parents house and settled in.  Finley didn't transition well and was up almost all night.  I had been up all Sunday night battling severe heartburn so I was exhausted.

Tuesday: Devin worked from "home" and Finley and I played with Grandma.  It was nice to have "new" toys and not be at our house with all of our typical ones.  Finley actually did quite well and we enjoyed watching the pretty snow and not being in it.  Finley took a great nap and I joined in desperately needing it after 2 nights of little to no sleep.

Tuesday night/ Wednesday Morning: I started having contractions around 2 a.m.  They were fairly painful and around every 5 minutes.  I kept telling myself they were Braxton Hicks because they weren't getting closer together, but couldn't sleep because of them.  Around 4:30 a.m. all of my tossing and turning woke Devin up and I told him that I was having contractions, but wasn't sure whether they were real or not.  We decided to get ready just in case.  Devin showered and I repacked us while continuing to track the contractions.  False Alarm... they went away by 6:00 a.m.

Wednesday: Devin went to work.  Finley and I enjoyed another day of playing inside.  She colored a lot and I continued to take it easy.  Again taking a nap while she did.  Wednesday night, Devin thought the roads were clear enough for us to venture home so we did.  We had taken both our cars over to his parents' house so we drove home separately.  His car doesn't have 4 wheel drive so he got stuck on our street not able to make it into the driveway.  It was late and we were both tired, but he managed to unload our bags and scrape the driveway until he could dig himself out and get his car parked off the street.  I put Finley to bed in the meantime and collapsed into bed too exhausted to do anything else.

Finley had a horrible night, but Devin was sweet enough to get up with her.  I think the transition back and forth was difficult on her both times.  It was hard for her to sleep in a different place even if it was her home and where she is the most comfortable.  Plus she didn't have any down time at home before being put into bed so I think she was just a bit out of sorts.

Thursday: Finley slept until almost 10:30 a.m. after having such a rough night.  She also took an incredibly long nap so I went into major nesting mode and managed to get some deep cleaning accomplished.  The top of our refrigerator has never been cleaner! =)  I just KNOW LbC will appreciate coming home to a clean refrigerator! Ha, ha!

Friday:
More snow, but fortunately, it was light and didn't add too much to our existing snow!

Going stir-crazy, I was so thankful that my hair appointment wasn't cancelled.  I was desperate to get my hair done before LbC arrived and though I usually drive an hour to get it done, I knew that I wouldn't be able to in this weather and Devin had already voiced concerns over me driving even in good weather at this point in my pregnancy.  Fortunately, my friend, Mary, recommended her lady and I was able to get in.  She did a great job and even though she is pricier than my normal person, I am so thankful to have someone closer that I can call in a pinch.

Friday night was a scheduled Girls' Night and even though the weather kept the attendance low, we had so much fun!  It was a great end to the week!!!!  I just love these girls!

Saturday:
After debating back and forth, we decided NOT to go to the Bedlam basketball game.  I was so disappointed, but with the weather and expecting LbC, we hadn't secured babysitting for Finley and Devin was worried that if we did go into labor during the game, we wouldn't make it to the hospital in time.  Fortunately, Allison and Andy were able to take our tickets which thrilled me!  Allison called to check on me practically every day last week when we were snowed in and also made me dinner (as did Devin's mom and aunt) when I was so sick a few weeks ago.  It is so great to have a neighbor like her!  They went and had a blast at the game so at least our tickets didn't go to waste!

We instead spent the day around the house.  Finley helped Daddy tackle the snow and ice while I cooked some meals to freeze.

They also enjoyed some time on the swings!

Saturday night we went to Paul and Lauren's house for dinner.  We were scheduled to have dinner with them a few weeks ago, but then I got sick and we had to cancel.  Lauren and I just knew I would go into labor and have to cancel our second attempt at dinner, but fortunately, we were able to get together and we had so much fun hanging out with them for the evening!  Though we would have loved to have LbC be the reason for cancelling, we are glad that we had a few fun things planned in spite of waiting for our bundle to arrive!

So we'll see what next week holds.  More bad weather is predicted so we'll wait and see what happens not only with it, but also with our sweet baby boy!  Oh, I just can't wait to meet him!
